The Tucker County Commission rejected the notion of zoning in the county. Resident Michael Goss had broached the subject of implementing zoning in the county at the July 9th Commission meeting and let the Commissioners stew on the subject over the next two weeks. Goss returned for the Commissioners’ July 23rd meeting for an answer. That answer was ‟No.”
Tucker County President Mike Rosenau said that he felt that the property of the citizens of the county was sacred.
‟You want Mike’s opinion, this Mike, and I’m only speaking for myself on zoning, I paid for my property, a government agency or anybody that infringes on my rights on that property, I don’t feel that I can ever accept or agree with,” Rosenau said.
Commissioner Fred Davis said that when he first became a Commissioner seven years ago, a zoning ordinance was attempted to be passed. At the time, Lowell Moore was a Commissioner on the board with him. County residents filled the Old Courtroom in the Courthouse and the Davis Town Hall to voice their opposition to the measure, according to Davis. And according to Davis, the opposition was strong.
‟They wanted to string me and Lowell Moore up,” Davis said.
Davis said it is difficult to change the rules over land that is already owned. Some of the land in the County has been owned by the same families for generations.
‟Its hard to change the rules if they already own the land,” Davis said. ‟It should have been done 30 years ago, 50 years ago.”
