[Thomas, WV, May 17, 2024] – Cortland Acres, the leading long-term care facility in Thomas, WV, recently commemorated National Nursing Home Week with a weeklong celebration filled with joy, laughter, and radiant memories. From May 12th to May 18th, 2024, residents and staff came together to honor the golden age of radio with a series of fun-filled activities and events.

The theme of this year’s National Nursing Home Week was “Radiant Memories,” paying homage to the nostalgia and charm of radio’s heyday. Throughout the week, Cortland Acres transformed into a hub of excitement as residents and staff immersed themselves in a variety of engaging activities.

The festivities kicked off with a lively Sock Hop luncheon, where staff donned their best retro attire and danced the Twist with the residents.   ArtSpring sponsored a stained-glass Craft session, allowing residents to unleash their creativity and craft beautiful works of art. ArtSpring promotes and cultivates the arts in public life and presents art festivals in Tucker County.

One of the highlights of the week was the much-anticipated visit from the Kona Ice Truck, which provided refreshing treats and smiles all around. The celebrations continued with a Campus Cookout, bringing together the residents, staff and residents from The Pines and Pineview along with the medical facilities located on the Cortland Campus.  A delicious picnic was enjoyed by all.

As the week drew to a close, Cortland Acres hosted a grand finale Popcorn and a Movie night, where residents and their “Grand Friends” from Mountain Laurel Learning Cooperative gathered to enjoy a classic film, the original Herbie the Love Bug from 1968.  The movie was quite a treat for the young and the “young at heart”.

“We had an absolutely fantastic time celebrating National Nursing Home Week here at Cortland Acres,” said Beth Clevenger, Administrator at Cortland Acres. “The energy and enthusiasm from residents, staff and our community partners made this week truly special. It was a joy to see everyone come together to create lasting memories and share in the spirit of camaraderie.”

Cortland Acres extends heartfelt thanks to all who contributed to the success of National Nursing Home Week and looks forward to creating more radiant memories in the days to come.
