PARSONS – The new assistant principal at TCHS will have some big shoes to fill, but Stephen Cosner, who was hired by the Tucker County BOE during their July 5 meeting, says he is well-prepared and eager to take on the new role.
Cosner said he taught at Southern Garrett High School in Oakland, Maryland for 33 years.
“I recently retired from there,” Cosner said. “I wanted to get into administration and this was the perfect opportunity for me to do that.”
Cosner said he taught under the block scheduling for more than 10 years and was on the committee to help implement that at Southern Garrett High School, making him aware of what obstacles the school might face when putting that in place.
“I come in bringing a love of block scheduling,” he said. “I believe the staff already has the enthusiasm and I have that enthusiasm as well. I have worked with the STEM initiative for several years and bring knowledge of that. Everything that TCHS is trying to do, I have been a big part of and am excited to be a part of.”
Cosner graduated from West Virginia University with a degree in mining engineering and then took a job at Southern Garrett High School as an electronics instructor.
“So I have taken lots of education courses to do that,” Cosner said. “When my daughters graduated school, I decided to get into administration. I now have a master’s degree in supervision and administration.”
Tucker County seemed a natural choice for Cosner, not only because of the experience and knowledge he brings – but he is also close to the area.
“I live in Red House, Maryland, which is two miles from the West Virginia line,” Cosner said. “My commute to work each morning has only grown by 10 minutes.”
He said he loves the area as well.
“I love Blackwater Falls and I love Canaan Valley,” he said. “My wife and I have wanted to hike the Otter Creek Wilderness Area for years. I love this area.”
Cosner said he wants to put his heart and soul into TCHS.
“I worked for 33 years at Southern High School and dedicated a lot of my life to that,” Cosner said. “I plan on doing the same thing for TCHS.”
