The Town of Davis has received notice of a $500,000 grant towards their upcoming sidewalk construction project. Davis Mayor Al Tomson announced the grant award during a regular meeting of the Town Council November 13th at the Davis Town Hall.
According to Tomson, the award was for $500,000 towards sidewalk construction and was awarded from the West Virginia Department of Highways. “We did received a $500,000 grant from DOH for sidewalk construction,” Tomson said.
Tomson said the Town already had $100,000 in design money awarded from grants/ “So we already had $100,000 grant for design,” Tomson said.
The grant money is the first phase of construction money for the project, according to Tomson. “Now we have the first phase of construction money,” Tomson said.
The money is part of a fund match grant in which the Town will be responsible for a 20% grant match, Tomson said. “These are funds that come with a match,” Tomson said. “So its a 20% match.”
Under the grant match, the Town will be responsible for a $100,000 grant match, Tomson said. “So we have to pay $20,000 to get $100,000. We have to pay $100,000 to get the $500,000,” Tomson said. “So that’s the way that money works.
The grant match funds are slated to come from the Town’s 1% sales tax fund, according to Tomson. “Out of the 1%,” Tomson said.
Tomson said the grant match will not need to paid up front. “And those will not be paid for a couple of years,” Tomson said. “They will not be paid until the project is finished.”
Construction on the project is slated to be sometime in 2026 or 2027, according to Tomson. “So for example, the design will probably be finished sometime towards the end of next year,” Tomson said. “Construction probably 2026, 2027 somewhere in that time frame. So that’s when the match has to be paid. Its not up in the beginning.”
