The Tucker County Landfill received an order from the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection requesting a formal statement on the site’s corrective action plan for stormwater. The Tucker County Solid Waste Authority Board was informed of the order at their December meeting on December 8th by Landfill Director Jody Alderman.
“We did receive an order from DEP regarding some of our previous stormwater violations dating back to 2023 to current and basically what they want us to do is, they want us to submit a corrective action plan as to how we are going to prevent any future exeedences in our stormwater discharge permit,” Alderman said.
Progress has already been made through improvements and measures the Landfill and the Board have put into place, Alderman said. Alderman said improvements in stormwater management has led to fewer incidents at the Landfill.
“You can see from 2023 to the current how much its improved and many less excursions we’ve had with what we’ve already done,” Alderman said.
Alderman said the DEP request centers on a formal report of what measures have been taken and what plans will be going forward to mitigate stormwater at the facility.
“So we are just going to do a report and send into them. Tell them everything that we have done to current and still what’s pending,” Alderman said.
Pending measures at the facility, according to Alderman, center around a new stormwater pond project. Plans have been in motion for months to construct a new stormwater pond at the facility. Digging at the site has stalled due to hitting rock.
Due to hard bedrock at the site, blasting will need to be contracted in the near future. Rock from the blasting will be utilized and crushed for construction of the new cell, according to Alderman. A bid packet is being worked on for the stormwater pond blasting and will be put out in the coming weeks.
Plans are to continue to work on the stormwater pond throughout the winter, weather permitting, Alderman said.
“We are going to try to pursue and get that done,” Alderman said. “We’ll probably put it in our timeline to have it completed by the end of June.”
