Public Encouraged to Join Local Food and Agriculture Supporters at Capitol and For Luncheon

CHARLESTON – Local food and agriculture advocates from every corner of West Virginia will gather at the Capitol building on January 26 to show support for local food and agriculture. Many participants will hold meetings with their local legislators to discuss state food and agriculture issues. The West Virginia Food & Farm Coalition and partners will hold legislative meetings to discuss proposed policy changes that would significantly benefit West Virginia food and farm businesses.

This event shows legislators the importance of local food and agriculture to the economy, rural livelihoods, and health of West Virginians. Local Foods Day 2016 begins between 7:30-8:00AM at the State Capitol as participants prepare for legislative meetings. This session’s proposed policy changes include local food purchasing preference, increased local food access in the state’s emergency food system, and increased market options for local food producers. Supporters who won’t attend legislative meetings will attend to show support for these and other local food issues. A resolution will be read declaring January 26, 2016 Local Foods Day.

After an exciting morning at the Capitol, participants will enjoy lunch, live music, and conversations on regional food and agriculture topics at the University of Charleston. The afternoon will focus on regional food system issues and project planning to address local food issues at each region’s level.

Local food and agriculture supporters are encouraged to attend. Carpools are forming across the state. For a full agenda of the day, to register, and to catch up on the Coalition’s Legislative Agenda visit www.wvfoodandfarm.org/LFD.
