A quilt display of wall hangings from the Log Cabin Quilters Guild of Elkins highlighting some of the 2023 quilt challenge “Wonderful West Virginia” is currently being displayed at Citizens Bank of West Virginia and Stevens’ Realty & Management in Parsons.
The Challenge included a certain small cut of fabric which was a requirement to use. The challenge was open to all members and had a time of about two and a half months to design, stitch and complete.
Kaila St Louis’ entry was hand and machine quilted and she used scrap fabrics to create her picture of forests, which surround us, and she finds so comforting and nurturing.
Lisa Hall made her small quilt depicting the dew kissed peony in her garden. This inspiration became complete with the sunrise view over the mountains from her home.
Diana Kerr captured many of her thoughts in her wall hanging, Almost Heaven as she highlighted Seneca Rocks in the background, and our sugar maple trees and of course a jug of sweet maple syrup from her memories of Blue Rock Farm Sugar Shack. She pushed herself into practicing new skills and produced a little gem.
Happy Tree was surrounded by the required fabric and fabric from Mary Durhams stash, the Elkins Sewing Center and from purchased fabric from St. Kitts in the Caribbean. Missouri Star Quilt company authored the pattern Happy Tree, and my choice of fabrics reminded me of all the colors of WV stated the artist Katie Kerns.
Karen Elza, a Citizens Bank retiree, used her scraps to compliment the required fabric to fashion a table runner she is exhibiting. Her creation is how she views West Virginia and all of its marvels.
On display at Stevens’ Realty are the two remaining entries that chose to be publicly shown. WV Trees by Margy Burns is machine quilted and has abundant color choices. A special touch is the Prairie-Point Pizzazz which allows the offering of blowing leaves when you view the project.
Fran Kordek used a simple white background to outline our marvelous state shape and the echoing machine quilting is wonderful.
Each exhibit has a quilted identifier of the Guild and depicts a great deal of work. The Log Cabin Quilt Diva has been “hanging out” at Stevens’ Realty and she is well dressed in buttons, real sheep wool, buttons, spools, and many other items. She first traveled to a quilt show in Columbus Ohio in 2007 at the National Quilting Show…. Since then, she has been a steady greeter at the annual quilt show at the Forest Festival in Elkins each year in October. Stevens’ Realty & Management is proud to sponsor this small exhibit for our community and to bring value and culture to our little corner of the world.
