THOMAS – Thousands of folks flocked to Mountaineer Days last weekend, where everyone attended many events in between rain showers. The event, sponsored by the Mountaineer Days Committee, kicked into high gear Friday with a hot dog sale and cakewalk at the Thomas Fire Hall.

On Saturday, folks participated in the walk and roll for life while craft and food vendors set up on the railroad grade downtown. Crafts include those made from trees, homemade rugs, black smith items, rocks and many foods.

A patriotic bicycle contest began at 10 a.m. and participants made their way through the midday parade. Also in the parade were muscle cars, antique cars, bicycles, tractors, fire trucks and youth groups. After lunch, folks gathered to try their luck at winning cakes at the cakewalk.

Fire fighters battled one another during the fireman’s water battle, and music was provided by Holly Ash, an “Elvis” impersonator and the Last Chance Band. Beautiful fireworks lit the dark sky to close out the day.

Mountaineer Days began in Thomas in the 1970s when Bernie and Mary Stilley organized the event. Back then, events were held downtown and included a pet parade, a Miss Mountaineer pageant, a bicycle parade and music and dancing. Then, they had a fireman’s water battle and firework display.

Those wishing to make donations to keep Mountaineer Days alive can send their donations to Mountaineer Days Committee at P.O. Box 146 in Thomas. Additional information is available by calling 304-463-4131.
