PARSONS – The Tucker County Baseball team played host to PVC Rival Pendleton County on Monday April 25th. The Mt. Lions could not get the offense going and fell in the contest 13-0.
Luke Cooper got it done on the bump on the way to a win for the visiting Wildcats. Cooper tossed 2 innings of shutout ball as he struck out 3, walked just 3 and surrendered no hits. Pendleton County handled the Tucker County pitching as 6 hitters combined for 15 hits, 10 RBI’s and 10 runs scored.
Eric McCrum took the loss for the Mt. Lions. McCrum allowed 13 runs in 5 innings, walked 4 and struck out 2. Justin Fike had the lone hit of the day for Tucker County. Pendleton County never trailed after scoring 6 runs in the 1st inning and the Wildcats went on to get the 13-0 victory.
PHILIPPI – The Mt. Lions traveled to Philip-Barbour on Wednesday April 27th. Tucker County racked up 6 hits, but it wasn’t enough as the Colts got the victory 13-2.
Sean Curtis of Philip-Barbour allowed 1 run over 4 and 1/3 innings. Curtis struck out 6, walked 1 and gave up 6 hits to pick up the win for the Colts. Philip-Barbour got 7 RBI’s off 8 hits on offense.
Bailey Bennett could not get it done for Tucker County on the mound, taking the loss. Bennett allowed 12 runs in 3 innings, walked 3 and struck out 2. The Mt. Lions scored 2 runs in the 5th inning to make the score 13-2. An error and a steal of home by Michael Gherman set off the Tucker County spurt. Shayne Liller went 2 for 3 for the Mt. Lions at the plate and Gherman, Aiden Bunnell and Isaiah Hollis had 1 hit each for Tucker County in the loss. Philip-Barbour got the victory 13-2.
UPPER GLADE – Tucker County traveled to Webster County on Friday April 29th and squared off against Webster County in the first round of the tournament. The Mt. Lions fought hard, but lost to the Highlanders 9-3.
Webster County never surrendered the lead after the 6th inning as they scored 8 runs in the inning off a 2 run homer by the Highlanders. The Mt. Lions scored 1 run in the 7th inning to cut the deficit to 6. Isaiah Hollis triggered the comeback with an RBI single. Bailey Bennett, Shayne Liller and Corrick Ambrose all had 1 hit for Tucker County. Justin Fike and Hollis both went 3-4 for the Mt. Lions. Hollis also had 2 RBI’s in the 9-3 loss for Tucker County.
UPPER GLADE – The Mt. Lions took on Pocahontas County in the Webster County Tournament consolation game at 9am on April 30th. Tucker County took home the victory in a close game 4-3.
Eric McCrum got the win on the mound for the Mt. Lions. The Warriors got 5 hits in the game compared to the Mt. Lions 3 hits, but Pocahontas County stranded 7 runners on base.
Tucker County jumped out to the early lead 1-0 in the 2nd inning as McCrum singled to score Michael Gherman. The Mt. Lions went up for good in the 5th inning as they scored 3 runs on a 2 run double by Shayne Liller and an RBI single by Gherman. The Warriors scored 2 runs in the 7th inning, but Pocahontas County could not draw even.
Tucker County recorded 3 double plays on defense in the game. Two of the double plays were 6-4-3 double plays (shortstop to second to first) Shayne Liller to Aiden Bunnell to Garrett Carrico. The other double play came at a critical point in the game, with no outs in the 6th inning. Pocahontas County had runners on 1st and 2nd. The ball was hit to deep right center field, Isaiah Hollis caught the fly ball and threw a perfect ball to Michael Gherman at 3rd base to tag out the runner for the double play. Tucker County got the next out and went on to win the contest 4-3.
