HAMBLETON – Many seniors at Tucker County High Schools received awards and scholarships to help continue their education. Each year, Armstrong presents 10 scholarships across the United States for $10,000 each. This is the first year the scholarship recipient was from West Virginia and was awarded to Kaylee Anne Nedrow.
This is the 10th year awards were presented by the Tucker Community Foundation. Executive Director Rob Burns said they would present 14 scholarships for a total of $26,000.
Those scholarships include:
$500 from the George W. & Marjorie H. Walburn Memorial Scholarship went to Zoe Sypolt.
$600 from the Martha C. Sponaugle Scholarship was awarded to Scottie Grace Bowley.
$600 to Bethany Barwinczak from the Jillian Roberts & Matilde Villaobos Millennium Scholarship.
$600 each to Jenna White and Zachary Sean Bishoff from the Harold W. & Ruth Shaffer Scholarship.
$700 each to Lydia Mullenax and Marcus Mason from the Herbert W. Clarkson Scholarship.
$900 to Christopher Purnell from the W. Denzel & Ernestine A. Kee Scholarship.
$1,100 to Jonna Burnside from the Orr Family Fund Scholarship.
$1,100 to Mikayla Long from the Doug & Betty Preble Scholarship.
$1,300 to Lindsey Knotts from the Fraternal Order of Eagles Scholarship.
$1,750 to Alexis Roth from the Harry & Elizabeth Boyce Scholarship.
$2,000 to Leslie Nestor from the Parsons H.S. Alumni Scholarship of the T.C.F.
$3,600 to Zoe Sypolt from the Rebecca Ann Chenoweth Memorial Scholarship.
$2,000 per year for 4 years to Taylor Ambrose from the Kep & Alice Smith Scholarship.
$8,000 to Kaylee Nedrow from the P.I. & Elizabeth Milkint Scholarship.
Jennifer Newland presented three Tucker County Rotary Scholarships for $1,000 to Lindsey Knotts, Lukas Thompson and Scottie Bowley.
The four recipients of the $500 Fellowship of Christian Athletes Scholarships were Madison Reall, Kaylee Nedrow, Taylor Ambrose and Zoe Sypolt.
During the ceremony, Principal Jay Hamric recognized Valedictorian Jonna Renea Burnside and Salutatorian Kaylee Anne Nedrow. Other members of the top 10 include Zoe Sypolt, Taylor Ambrose, Amanda Harper, John Chambers, Alexis Roth, Brandon Moran, Cheala Hackney and Cortney Haddox.
Hamric recognized Taylor Ambrose as second place winner in the state in the WV Young Writers’ Competition. He also recognized John Paul Castells for being accepted into Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine.
“According to the U.S. News and World Report, Bowdoin College is the number four liberal arts college in the United States,” Hamric said. “Congratulations J.P. We hope that sets the pathway for more students, because we have great students who will go to some of the best colleges in the nation.”
There were eight students who fulfilled the requirements and are eligible for the Promise Scholarship.
