Representatives for the Tucker Community Foundation presented a proposal to the City of Parsons Council for a community project, a Parsons Day of Service. Taylor Ambrose spoke on behalf of the organization at the Council’s June 17th meeting.
Volunteer West Virginia awarded the Foundation a grant to host a community service project. The Foundation proposed a community wide cleaning and beautification initiative for the City on Saturday, September 6th from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Lunch would be provided to all volunteers, Ambrose said.
The Foundation is currently brain storming a task list for the service day, Ambrose said. She said the organization would like to collaborate with the City on the list in order to target what is needed most.
Ambrose requested that the Council meet with the Foundation in the next two weeks to discuss the project. Should the Council not be available, Ambrose said a request form was provided in the packet of information provided to the Council. The request form will be made available for public input, as well.
“This would give us an idea of the most important things you want to see done in the community,” Ambrose said.
The grant, according to Ambrose, would fund a “substantial” project in the community. The foundation is working with the high schools in their service area and anticipate two students from every high school they serve to attend the event.
Ambrose said the Foundation was seeking approval from the Council to host the day of service September 6th, carry out community service projects in City limits, assistance from the City in collecting and disposing of trash bags from litter pick up and other clean up tasks and permission to use the Pocket Park for a volunteer luncheon at the conclusion of the event.
“We really want this to be community members contributing to what they want to see done around town,” Ambrose said.
No action was taken on the matter at the meeting by the Council. The Foundation was thanked for their time and presentation by the Mayor and Council.
