Residents and Visitors to Tucker County were not shy on entertainment options the end of September. Between the Parsons Volunteer Fire Department Firemans Fair in Parsons, the Leaf Peepers Festival in Davis and the Annual Flanagan Hill Fall Festival, there was something for everyone the last weekend in September in Tucker County.
The Parsons VFD Firemans Fair was an annual event that began with an open house of the firehouse on September 23rd with the main event from September 24th to the 27th in downtown Parsons. The highlight as always for many were of course the Kiwanis corndogs and the Gambill Carnival. Of course the annual Cook-Off was also perfuming the air and making mouths water on September 27th, courtesy of the City of Parsons and Kingsford.
This year featured a variety of musical acts sponsored by the City of Parsons, that performed on the downtown stage set up in the street in front of the Courthouse. Acts such as Beyond the Barrier (September 25th) and Hair Supply on September 26th filled the streets and alleyways of downtown with music, cheers and a little laughter for a few hours each night. Soda Pop Gypsies filled out the event schedule on the evening of September 27th.
On top of the mountain, sneakers were being tied and umbrellas were lofted in the rain in Davis for the annual Run For It 5k Run/Walk and 2k Walk. The run was part of the annual Leaf Peepers festival in Davis.
As of late August, already 74 teams had registered with 722 individuals scheduled to participate. Individual racers had until September 21st to sign up for the race on September 27th with limited in-person registration available on race day, according to the internet. Registration for this year’s event opened on April 1st according to the Tucker Community Foundation’s website. Run For It is held by the Tucker Community Foundation in cooperation with various community partners.
Leaf Peepers is more than just Run For It, however. Over the three days of the festival, a variety of events, arts and crafts and outdoor activities were planned that included a craft show, parade, hikes, concerts, instructional classes and a Murder Mystery Dinner. Saturday also began with a pancake breakfast held by the Odd Fellows that drew crowds out the door for hours.
Even the smaller communities were getting in on the action on Saturday. Flanagan Hill held its Annual Flanagan Hill Fall Festival at the Flanagan Hill Community Center. Over the course of the day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. the community hosted a variety of activities and treats including Kids Games and a Bake Sale at 10, a Turkey Dinner from 1 to 5 p.m., Mystery Bingo from 2 to 3 p.m., live music from 3:30 to 5 p.m. and ending with a Cakewalk at 6 p.m. There was also a Homemade Apple Butter sale that ran all day or until it was sold out.
All in all, there was plenty to keep everyone busy over the weekend and partying the night away. With this years festivals behind us may the memories of this years festivals memories be as happy and warm as a pair of leg warmers and comfortable as a pair of gellies.
