PARSONS – Veterans keep our country safe and they put their lives on the line to protect the freedoms we hold dear. All through this week, celebrations were held to thank Veterans for all they do in Tucker County. Both Tucker Valley Elementary Middle and Davis Thomas Elementary Middle Schools dedicated time to thank local Veterans. A ceremony at the Tucker County Senior Center and at some Tucker County Fire Departments gave residents the opportunity to thank those serving in the military.
On Wednesday, Veterans, their families, friends and neighbors gathered at the Tucker County Veterans Wall to celebrate Veterans Day. Parsons Mayor Dorothy Judy asked those who gathered what was happening 30 years ago, and someone answered cleaning up following the flood.
Judy asked everyone to remember who came and helped after the flood – which was there to help bring back peace and tranquility following the devastation from the flood. She said it was the Army National Guard who came to the small town in Tucker County – helping keep looters from taking items that survived the flood and helping make sure everyone was safe.
Following the Mayor’s talk, Treyton Myers, son of Jason and Beki Myers of Parsons, shared a poem thanking Veterans for all they do.
Amy Canfield performed the National Anthem and God Bless America, and Rev. William “Bill” Brown, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Parsons, led the invocation and benediction.
West Virginia State Police Sgt. Kevin Keplinger, who retired from the military, served as guest speaker for the ceremony. He spoke about the military during the time of George Washington. He said back then, the military was poor and when he crossed the Delaware, his troops had no food or supplies. Keplinger said the win was a big win and helped restore the faith in the military and those in charge.
Members of the Tucker County Veterans presented a wreath and played taps. The event was emceed by Vicky McCrum.
