During the Parsons City Council meeting, renters for the second story of the Municipal building were discussed. Two nurse practitioners from Oakland and the St. George Medical Clinic expressed interest in renting the space from the city.
The rent payments from any renter would contribute to the city’s general fund. The council tabled the matter.
The council also moved to raise the rent from $500 to $600 on the three bedroom rental house on Poplar Street.
Toward the end of the meeting the council entered into an executive session to discuss the hiring of a partolman for the Parsons police force. The council decided to hire Nick Gidley as a full time patrolman with benefits.
Finance Director Danielle Bible presented the current finances. The council paid two invoices, one totaling $77,229.99 and one for $1,586.59.
City Administrator Jason Myers sits on the PEIA Finance Board appointed by the Governor. He attended a number of public hearings before Christmas. Myers reported that premiums will not increase for any public employees. “One thing we did improve in the plan is that we will allow people on the bordering counties of West Virginia to seek healthcare outside of the state,” Myers said. Instead of being covered in network at a 70-30 rate, now PEIA will cover out of state healthcare at an 80-20 rate.
The cemetery mapping and database project continues as internment records are reviewed and scanned. The goal of the project is for the files to be electronically accessible.
BFS closed on the Sheetz property before Christmas. Tanks are being installed on January 21. BFS is undecided on the vendor that will occupy the interior of the store. The council discussed preferred food vendors for the store.
Myers presented a social media policy and advised the council to review the proposed policy. The council will move on the policy at the next meeting.
Vicky Smith will lead a series of yoga classes held at the Parsons Community Building every Wednesday for 10 weeks from 6 to 7 p.m. Materials are provided. Classes are by donation only.
Myers and Mayor Dorothy Judy will attend the West Virginia Municipal League’s Mid-Winter Conference in Charleston, West Virginia on January 27 and 28.
The next Parsons City Council meeting is scheduled on Tuesday, January 22 at 6 p.m.
