The Hendricks Ruritan Club recently donated $9,000 to the PHS Alumni which will be given out as scholarships over the next nine years to a TCHS senior who furthers their education.
The Hendricks Ruritan Club that the club will be disbanding at the end of the year. The Hendricks Ruritan Club has been an integral part of our community for more than 64 years and are proud of the many accomplishments they have had.
The Hendricks Ruritans are probably best known for hosting the ‘Hick Fair’ every Labor Day weekend for 47 years. The first Hick Fair was conducted in 1963 in Hendricks WV, and held each year thereafter until the flood of 1985 destroyed everything. They later moved to Camp Kidd in Holly Meadows in 1986, and built the concession stand, the announcers stand and horse arena, the 4-H exhibit building, and the chicken BBQ pit that are still used today by many in our community.
The Hick Fair, which was later changed to the Hick Festival, was a weekend filled with fun and many activities that included wood chopping and logging events, horseshoe pitching, coon chase, turkey calling contest, horse pulling contest, crafts shows, country music show, gospel sings, cake walk, Queen Laurel Pageant and coronation, fiddle and banjo contests, tobacco spitting contests, many children’s activities that included an egg throwing contest and a bicycle race, their famous ox roast and chicken barbecue, as well as the best corndogs around.
The Hendricks Ruritans have given away thousands of dollars over the years for college scholarships and money to help those in need, as well as donating time and labor to help our community. They have literally picked up hundreds of bags of litter over the years through the Adopt-A-Highway program.
After December all that will remain of the Hendricks Ruritan Club will be wonderful memories and those touched by them in whatever way. The Hendricks Ruritans belonged to al organization that truly knows the meaning of Fellowship, Goodwill and Community Service.
