PARSONS – Folks flocked to Mountain Valley Bank in Parsons to cast their votes for their favorite entry in the Mountaineer Garden Club’s Easter Exhibit and selected a beautiful creation by Faith Moore as the winner.
Moore’s piece featured green and cream colored items with a splash of lilac. Mountaineer Garden Club member Jean Long said the club hosts the Easter Exhibit and a Christmas Exhibit at Citizens Bank of West Virginia. She said there were about 10 entries in the Easter Exhibit and said many folks enjoyed seeing the entries, participating in the event and voting for the winner.
Long said the Mountaineer Garden Club is looking for new members.
“Membership is open to everyone,” Long said. “Our monthly meetings are held at 6 p.m. on the first Tuesdays of the month at the Five Rivers Public Library. Meetings include a business meeting and a program featuring guest speakers or members sharing tips and information about gardening and related subjects.”
Long said during the program, members learn about flowers, plantings or flower arranging. She said the club promotes feeding birds and the group promotes conservation of land, sea and sky. The Mountaineer Garden Club is a proponent of recycling.
“We work on the beautification of the city and maintain the welcome sign garden on Route 72 across from Donna Moore’s beauty shop,” Long said. “We do some work in the flower beds around city hall and around the Tucker County Courthouse.”
The club also sponsors a program involving the Nina Tree in front of the Courthouse. Long said the club helps children adorn the tree with bird-friendly ornaments and each year, they sponsor one child to attend Tucker County 4-H Camp. In February the group visits with residents of Cortland Acres and shares handmade and purchased Valentines.
“We do an Arbor Day planting and this year we will plant a tree in Mill Race Park and one at Camp Kidd with the help of some 4-Hers,” Long said. “
The Mountaineer Garden Club chooses the Yard of the Month in and around the Parsons area. One residence and one business or church yard is selected each month from April until September. The club was formed in 1958 and next year will celebrate 60 years.
Anyone wanting to join the Mountaineer Garden Club is invited to contact one of the members or may come to their next meeting which will be at 6 p.m. May 2 at the Five Rivers Library. The program for the evening will feature Sandie Hockman sharing information from the Master Gardener Conference she attended recently.
“There were such wonderful speakers there,” Hockman said. “The Master Gardener Program is offered through the Extension Service and we partner with Randolph County.”
