PARSONS – Through wind, rain, snow and ice, Steve Young walks across America for the Victory Junction Camp. This year, Young started his walk on April 15 in southern Virginia and has covered most of the Northeast. He has been through Maine and New Hampshire, just seven miles from the Canandian border.
He recently made a stop in Parsons during his walk. Young said, “In my experience there are more good people out there than bad.” He has had help procuring motel rooms in really bad weather but mostly spends his nights in a tent. “I always try to be in a place where I can go to church on Sundays and if I can find a Bible study on Wednesdays, I like to visit those as well.” stated Young.
Young started his first walk in 2010 and has been in 42 states, covering over 25,000 miles. He has been in over 500 churches and asked for no donations. His goal is to bring awareness to everyone he meets about the Victory Junction Camp. Victory Junction enriches the lives of children with serious illnesses by providing life-changing camping experiences that are exciting, fun and empowering, at no cost to children or their families.
Since opening their gates in 2004, the year-round programs not only challenge campers to find resilience by looking beyond their illness, but provide a safe place to try new things under unobtrusive, complete 24-hour medical supervision. Their state-of-the-art facilities are intentionally designed to be accessible and inclusive for all campers affected by one of the many diagnoses served at camp.
Victory Junction strives to create a foundation that fosters independence, confidence and continuous growth after camp to better the quality of life for children. They are honored to have provided camp to children from all 50 states, as well as several foreign countries.
