At last week’s Tucker County Commission meeting, Melissa Bonner and Donna Helmick presented a proclamation to the Commission to honor April as Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention month.
The Family Resource Network is holding the Pinwheels for Prevention Parade on April 19 on the Tucker County Football Field. The parade is held in acknowledgement of Child Abuse and Awareness month.
April is also Sexual Assault Awareness month. Commissioner Lowell Moore read a proclamation regarding sexual abuse and awareness. “It’s time for all of us to take appropriate action to support one another to create a safer environment for all,” the proclamation read.
County Planner Dennis Filler and Development Authority Executive Director Steven Leyh recently attended the USDA Broadband Grant Workshop in Morgantown.
“Folks, that is a very, very exhaustive process,” Filler commented. “The biggest challenge now we have is to identify a good candidate project here in the county. We will not be able, in my opinion, to solve all of Tucker County’s communication problems in one broad swath,” Filler said.
Filler mentioned the Leadmine area might be a good candidate project for a grant bid.
The 2018-2019 budget was finalized by the Commission and sent to the state auditor’s office. The levy rate was reduced to 14.2 percent.
As the County Clerk’s office prepares for the upcoming election, County Clerk Sherry Simmons reminded all that early voting begins on April 25 and ends May 5. The last day to register to vote is April 17.
Simmons also announced that Jessica Supak Wamsley is an official write in on the ballot for the Cheat District position on the Board of Education.
Kevin White provided updates from the Office of Emergency Management. There were multiple high water incidents in the lower portion of the county over the last two weeks.
Following state protocol, the office conducted a tornado warning test in the western portion of the county. The test was conducted to “see what we needed to do to make this a county wide event next year,” White said.
The next meeting of the Tucker County commission will be on Wednesday, April 11 at 9 a.m. in the Tucker County Courthouse Courtroom.
