The Board meeting was held in the music room of DTEMS.

The Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, October 3 was held at Davis Thomas Elementary Middle School and was attended by a number of the school’s faculty and staff.  An example of a new bleacher being installed in the gym was on display for the meeting.  The bleachers will be fully installed for the first home basketball game in December.

The Big Bucks Bingo fundraiser raised close to $6,600 for the bleachers at Davis Thomas Elementary Middle School.  “It was a lot of work, but very successful,” Principal Alicia Lambert said.  “It was a good jump start to fundraising.”

The West Virginia Regional Education Services Agency (RESA) will not provide services to the county in 2018.  Dr. Campbell met with representatives from Harrison County to fill gaps in the services provided through the program.  “We have moved forward to make a plan to replace a lot of the services that we have been getting in the past,” Dr. Campbell said.  The plan is for the counties to divide the responsibilities of the previous services provided.

Board President Tim Turner summarized the Local Initiatives Support Corporation meeting at the high school.  “Highlights from that were Mr. Cosner shared the math action plan with the group.  They also talked about the honors courses.”  Eastern West Virginia Community and Technical College will no longer pay tuition costs for high school students.  A federal student aid night was also discussed at the LISC meeting.

October is fire prevention month, and fire departments are working with elementary students throughout the county.

The homecoming parade will take place in Parsons on Thursday, October 19.  An early dismissal was approved on Friday, October 13 for Faculty Senate and crisis prevention training.  November 7 will be a full day of instruction.  There is an LISC meeting on October 25 at 4:30 at the high school.  A Veteran’s Day program will be held at Davis Thomas Elementary Middle School on November 8 at 10 a.m.  Tucker Valley Elementary Middle School will hold their Veteran’s Day program on November 9 at 10 a.m.

Davis Thomas Elementary Middle School will hold an afterschool STEM program for pre-K through 3rd grade running from October 10 to November 16. The program will take place from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Tina Carr was hired as an Elementary Teacher at DTEMS.  Robert Markley was hired as a mentor teacher at TVEMS.  Lauren Hicks, Melissa Tauscher, Tracy Harlan, and Christine Ward were all hired as Extended Day Enrichment Teachers.  Harry Poling was hired as an after-school bus operator for the extended day enrichment program.

The next meeting will be held on Monday, October 16 at Tucker County High School at 4 p.m.
