Alan Kenneth Smith (Smitty), age 86 of Leesburg, VA passed away September 5, 2024 in the care of Capital Caring Hospice. Alan, the son of Henry Harrison and Loutie Hedrick Smith, was born in Red Creek, WV on June 20, 1938.
Mr. Smith attended Flanagan Hill School and graduated from Mountaineer High School. After high school, Alan continued his education at Davis and Elkins College majoring in education and serving in the ROTC program. Upon graduation from Davis and Elkins, Alan accepted a position at Loudon County High School, where he taught math and sponsored the Yearbook and several other student organizations during his 38 year teaching career. Upon his retirement in 1998, Alan continued working the ticket gates for most sporting events at Loudoun County High School and later at Briar Woods High School. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame at Loudoun County High School in 2016.
Family was always very important to Alan. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Merlin Propst, Ernest Propst (Frances), Richard Propst, and Lewis Smith as well as brother-in-law, James Good. Left to cherish his memory are his sisters, Bonnie Smith Good of Manassas, VA, Violet Smith Charles of Winchester, VA and sister-in-law, Rose Marie Smith of Red Creek, WV. Also surviving are his nieces, Susan (Mark) Pritt, Carol (David) Shirley, Jennifer (Bobby) Miles, Cindy (Jeff) Shiflet, Karen Smith, Sarah (Jeff) Pumphrey, and nephews Gary (Cindy) Simmons and Wayne (Robin) Simmons, as well numerous great nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mr. Smith was a member of Flanagan Hill Church, which he enjoyed attending, when returning to West Virginia for summer visits. He was also a member of the Masonic lodge. In his free time, Alan enjoyed watching sports, especially baseball, studying family history and making everyone laugh with his jokes and sense of humor.
A viewing for Alan K. Smith will be held at Loudoun Funeral Chapel in Leesburg, VA on Friday, September 13, 2024 from 6-8 pm.
A viewing will also be held at Flanagan Hill Church in Red Creek, WV from 10-12 am on Saturday, September 14, 2024. Mr. Smith’s funeral will be at 12:00 o’clock at Flanagan Hill Church with internment immediately following at Flanagan Hill Cemetery.
