Ancile “Sonny” Evick, age 87, of Monroe, Ohio, passed peacefully surrounded by his family, on Thursday, December 12, 2013 at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton.
He was born October 15, 1926 in Parsons, West Virginia and moved to Ohio in 1953. He married Maxine Phillips on June 22, 1952, and they celebrated their 61st Wedding Anniversary this year. He served in the U.S. Navy during W.W. II, in the Philippines. He enjoyed going on the Honor Flight to W.W. II Memorial in Washington, D.C. in 2009.
After receiving his Bachelor’s Degree he taught school in a one room school house near Parsons, West Virginia. After moving to Ohio, he taught American History and Social Studies for the Middletown-Monroe School District, retiring in 1984 after 32 years of service. He was a member of the Breiel Boulevard First Church of God, and participated in missionary work at the church in the Philippines, Mexico and Panama. He was a longtime Basketball, Football and Track Coach, for both boys and girls teams. He enjoyed organizing family reunions in West Virginia, gardening fruits and vegetables, and was an avid bowler. Preceding him in death were his parents, Olin and Delphia (Bennett) Evick; four brothers, Ray, Olin, Ralph and Dick; and four sisters, Lucille Gilmore Robbins, Ruth Purkey, Sue Shrout and Mary Orr.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Maxine Evick; four children, John Richard Evick, wife Lydia, Douglas Ward Evick, wife Vicki, Robert Alan Evick, wife Terri, and Janet Kay Hogan, husband David; 11 grandchildren, Heather (Chris), Brandon (Elizabeth), Robbie (Ashley), Jacob (fiancée Bridgette), Tyler, Kassie (Nathanael), Micah, Karis, Brianna, Maddie, and Kaylah; and 12 great grandchildren. Visitation was Monday, December 16, 2013 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Breiel Boulevard First Church of God, 2000 N. Breiel Boulevard, Middletown. Funeral services were Tuesday, December 17, 2013 at 10 a.m. at the church, with Pastor Wes Duff officiating. Interment at North Monroe Cemetery, Monroe, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Mission Board at Breiel Boulevard Church of God, 2000 N. Breiel Boulevard, Middletown, Ohio 45042. Arrangements by Herr-Riggs Funeral Home, 210 S.
