CHARLES LEE CANFIELD, age 76 years, a resident of the Pheasant Run Road Community, Kerens, WV, departed this life Sunday afternoon, June 10, 2018 at his home, with his wife at his bedside, surrounded by his loving family and under the care of Mountain Hospice. He had been in declining health.
He was born Friday, January 9, 1942 at Montrose, WV, a son of the late John Eli and Goldie Cross Canfield. On October 25, 1963 at Oakland, MD, he was married to the former Linda Yvonne Carr, who survives. They had celebrated fifty-four years of marriage.
Also surviving are two sons, Eddie Canfield and fiancé Tonia of Fresno, OH, and Vincent Canfield and wife Tonya of Bedford, PA; one daughter, Sheila Faye Lipscomb and husband Keith of St. George; two brothers, Ward Canfield and wife Carolyn of Kerens and Sance Canfield and wife Rebecca of Elkins; four sisters, Sylva Saxberg and companion, Jeffery of Peach Bottom, PA, Genevia Stark of Elkins, Charles twin sister, Norma Jean Lawrence and husband Floyd of Elkins and Ruth Carr of Belington; one half-sister; Helen Biggs and husband Pete of Philippi; many grandchildren and great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death are one granddaughter, Ashley Lynette Lipscomb; one brother, Elwood Lee Canfield; and two brothers-in-law, Hancel Carr and Wayne Stark.
He attended the school at Montrose. He previously attended the Irons Chapel Church. He was a Contracting Forman for Quail Ridge Construction Company, having worked at the Mt. Storm Power Plant and other power stations during outages working primarily on the pre-heat wheel. Most of his work included Timber cutter for most of the local logging operations and in later years he enjoyed cutting and selling firewood. Charles was an avid hunter, fisherman, bowler and woodsman. He loved his family and most of his happy times were outside in his woodpile. Mr. Canfield believed in God, Jesus and hard work. His family called him “The Last Eccentric Mountain Man.”
The family received friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. Final rites were conducted at the funeral home on Thursday, June 14, 2018 at 11 a.m. The Rev. J. Michael Lantz officiated and interment followed at the Kalar Cemetery at Shavers Fork. The Lohr & Barb Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements for CHARLES LEE CANFIELD.
