David Lindberg Roberts, 88, a resident of Hambleton, passed from this life Thursday, October 20, 2016 at the Davis Medical Center in Elkins.
David was born Wednesday, December 5, 1927 at Hambleton, a son of the late Charles Ashton Roberts and Lucille Hagerty Roberts. On June 9, 1951, he married the love of his life, Rita Eileen Haller Roberts, who survives. They were married 65 years.
Left to cherish his memory is a very special niece and nephew, Lucille Roberts Stilwell and husband Darrel. Lots of “great” nieces and nephews. A specia l “Thank you” to Barbara Haller.
David is the last surviving member of his family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers: Fred, Ben, Charles, Bill, Jack, Gene and two sisters, Alice and Mildred.
David was a graduate of Parsons High School with the class of 1946. He was a member of the National Honor Society. He joined the U.S. Navy after graduation becoming a technician in the U.S. Naval Hospital at Bethesda, Maryland. He worked for the Veterans Hospital in Martinsburg and Fairchild Aircraft as an inspector. He returned to Hambleton and had a coal business. He also worked for the Greenlief Funeral Home and retired from the WV Department of Labor.
David loved to ride the mountain trails on his bike, loved to tell the history of West Virginia and the local folk lore. David lived his life as stated by William Cullen Bryant:
So live, that when thy summons comes to join
The innumerable caravan, which moves
To that mysterious realm, where each shall take
His chamber in the silent halls of death,
Thou go not, like the quarry-slave at night,
Scourged to his dungeon, but, sustained and soothed
By an unfaltering trust, approach thy grave
Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch
About him, and lies down to pleasant dreams.
David’s request for cremation with be honored and memorial services will be at a later date.
Our thanks to the Parsons VA Clinic, Preston Memorial Home Care, ERCC, and a very special lady Patty Fulton.
The Hostetler Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements for David Lindberg Roberts. Condolences may be sent to the family at Hambleton, WV 26269. www.hostetlerfuneralhome.com
