Hugh Clark Shiflet, age 100, of Berkeley Springs, WV, formerly of Parsons, WV, died on Thursday, December 5, 2019 at War Memorial Hospital in Berkeley Springs.
Born June 7, 1919 in Swoope, VA, he was the son of the late Lester Huffman and Lucy Jane Driver Shiflet.
He was a member and past Elder of the Parsons Presbyterian Church and had attended Union Chapel United Methodist Church for the past six years. Hugh attended Green Valley School which was a one room school located near the family farm in Virginia and graduated from Millboro High School in 1937. He served with the U. S. Army Air Corps as a military policeman during World War II from 1941–1945. He spent two years in San Angelo, TX before serving in England, France, Belgium and Germany. Hugh began working at the local hardware store in 1948 and in 1952 purchased a farm supply store in Parsons and began operating the Tucker Farm Supply. He owned and operated the Tucker Farm Supply, a Southern States Cooperative, until his retirement in 1981.
Hugh and his wife, the late Mary Rawlings Smith Shiflet, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on September 12, 1998. Hugh enjoyed years of woodworking, specializing in wormy chestnut gun cabinets. He was a gardener, kept honeybees for a hobby and was a founding member and past president of the Tucker County Beekeepers. In 2019 and at age 100, he was the oldest living member of the Shiflet family.
Surviving are his children, Charles Clark Shiflet and his wife Joan of Coal City, WV, James Lee Shiflet and his wife Janet of West Chester, PA, and Rebecca Ann Stotler and her husband Arnie of Berkeley Springs, one sister, Martha Jane Draper of Richmond, VA, eight grandchildren, John Charles Shiflet and his wife Rebecca of Crab Orchard, WV, Tiffany Michelle Shiflet of Coal City, WV, Amanda Layman Showalter and her husband Brendon of Coatesville, PA, Ryan Joseph Shiflet of Thorndale, PA, Brittany Nicole Keenan and her husband Leigh of Bethlehem, PA, Jeremiah Lee Brock and his wife Charley of Inwood, WV, Andrew Clark Brock and his wife Cortney of Hedgesville, WV and Carson Rawlings Stotler of Berkeley Springs, five great grandchildren, John Michael Shiflet and Kelsey Lynn Shiflet, both of Beckley, WV, Trevor Joseph Showalter of Coatesville, PA, Carter Grace Brock of Inwood, WV, Oliver Briggs Brock of Hedgesville, WV and Lincoln James Keenan of Bethlehem, PA and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Rawlings Smith Shiflet on May 3, 2000, one sister, Mary Carolyn Nichols and one brother, the Rev. Harold Driver Shiflet.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 9, 2019 at Union Chapel United Methodist Church, 10123 Valley Road, Berkeley Springs, WV with military honors provided by the Tri-State Honor Guard. Pastor Michael Leedom will officiate. Interment will be in Parsons Cemetery, Parsons, WV.
The family will receive friends from 2-6 p.m. on Sunday at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 95 Union Street, Berkeley Springs, WV and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.
