Mrs. Ida Bell Marshall Murphy was born on December 2, 1924 to Anderson Marshall and Zeralene Coleman Marshall in Monroeville, Alabama. Ms. Ida’s spirit passed away from her earthly body 11:30 am, Tuesday, March 27, 2018. She passed peacefully with her daughters, Ilene and Elaine, holding her hands.

Her early childhood and adolescent years were spent in Tensaw, Alabama. At the age of six, she accepted Christ as her Savior and was baptized at the riverside into the Antioch #2 Baptist Church. She married Melrose Earl. In 1939, they moved to Detroit Michigan. To this union one child, Elaine, was born in 1942. This marriage was dissolved as the result of divorce in March 1952.

October 11, 1954, in Detroit, Michigan, Ida married Cleon Milton Murphy of Chattanooga, Tennessee and to this union, one child, Ilene, was born in 1955. As a result of this marriage, Cleon adopted Elaine and became her adopted father.

Throughout her life, Ida was involved in volunteer endeavors such as the Historical Society, the N.A.A.C.P., the Urban League, the Girl Scouts, after-school programs, Homemakers Extension, and various church organizations including the church and community choirs, usher boards, committees, as well as Vacation Bible Schools. She was always willing and eager to share her knowledge, skills and expertise with others especially in the areas of arts and crafts.

She was known as Mom, Mamma, Ms. Ida, Aunt Ida, Grammy and Grandma. Those left behind to cherish her memories are her two daughters: Ilene S. Evans of Thomas, West Virginia, Elaine Elzia of Boulder, Colorado; three grandchildren, Peggy Patch of Chicago, Illinois, Theodore, Eugene Elzia of Palm Springs, California and Corrin Evans of Illinois.

At the request of Mrs. Murphy, her remains were cremated. A memorial service will be held, Sunday, April 22, 2018 at 2 p.m. at St. Johns Lutheran Church, Davis, WV. Hinkle Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. www.hinklefuneralhome.com
