Julia Ann “Judy” Volitis Gutshall, age 88 years, a resident of Parsons, WV, departed this life Saturday morning, December 6, 2014 at Colonial Place at Elkins, WV.
She was born Sunday, September 26, 1926 at Thomas, WV, a daughter of the late Francis and Patricia O’Day Volitis. On August 4, 1947 at Elkins, WV, she was married to Coach Neil Austin Gutshall, who preceded her in death, February 21, 2007. They had celebrated sixty years of marriage.
Surviving are four sons; Robert N. Gutshall and wife Deborah of Parsons, David Gutshall and wife Donna of Spartanburg, SC, Thomas Gutshall and wife Susie of Parsons and Gary Gutshall and wife Cindy of Fredericksburg, VA: six grandchildren, Carridy Gutshall Bender and husband Mike, David Gutshall and wife Lindsey, Jessica Gutshall, Laura Gutshall, Ashley Gutshall and Chelsea Gutshall; and two great grandchildren, Boss and Teagan.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family having been preceded in death are three brothers, Frank Volitis, Francis “Jack” Volitis, Jr. and Joseph Vincent Volitis; four sisters Anna Stanley, Mary Ann Volitis, Mary Margaret Charles and Patricia Goff.
She was a graduate of Thomas High School. She resided at St. Agnes at Baltimore, MD, while attending John Hopkins Hospital graduating with a degree in Nursing. She was a former employee of the Welch Hospital in McDowell County. She and her husband Coach Neil Gutshall moved to Parsons in 1957, where they settled and raised their family. During that period, she was a Nurse at the former Tucker County Hospital, and at the time of her retirement, she was an employee of the Mt. Top Home Health agency as a home health Nurse. She was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church at Parsons, which she was instrumental in the foundation of the present church. She was active in the All Letter Club at Parsons High School. She enjoyed gardening, flowers and yard work and beautifying the church.
The family received friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. On Tuesday evening at 7 p.m, a rosary was recited by The Rev. Father Timothy Grassi. On Wednesday morning, December 10, 2014, Mrs. Gutshall will be moved to Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, where the Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m, December 10, 2014. The Rev. Father Timothy Grassi will be the presider and interment will follow at the Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman.
