Lucille Dumire Kight, age 93 years, a well-known educator, and a resident of the Chenoweth Creek Road Community, Elkins, WV departed this life Sunday morning, June 1, 2014 at the Hospice Care Regional Inpatient Center at Elkins, WV with her family at her side. She had been in her usual health.
She was born Monday, February 14, 1921 at Elkins, WV a daughter of the late Orvis Miller “O. M.” and Effie Jane Dennison Dumire. On April 8, 1955 at Elkins, WV she was married to Vurl Willard “Fuzzy” Kight, who preceded her in death January 7, 1968. Surviving are one step daughter, Cassandra Ann Stewart of Oakland, MD; one niece, Sue Wallace; one nephew, Jim Dumire and wife Terri; five great nephews, Jack L. Wallace; David Wallace; Ryan Glen Dumire; William R. Dumire and David Keith Dumire; three great nieces, Karen Moats and husband Charlie; Cindy Young and husband Tim; Julie Hensley and husband Todd.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Preceding her in death are one brother, Keith Denison Dumire and one sister, Helen Dumire Baisden and two nephews, William D. “Denny” Baisden and William David Dumire.
She was a graduate of Elkins High School with the Class of 1939 and Davis & Elkins College with a degree in Education. She began her teaching career in the early 1940’s, having taught at Thomas High School, Parsons High School; Elkins High School and the Randolph County Vocational Technical Center, from which she retired in 1979. She was a member of the Randolph Chapter # 74, Order of the Eastern Star, the Randolph County Retired School Employees, the American Association of University Women, the Randolph County Senior Center, Delta Kappa Gamma and for over fifty years the Otterbein United Methodist Church. She was a basket weaver, enjoyed crocheting, knitting, reading and was an avid West Virginia University Sports Fan, particularly basketball.
The family received friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins on Wednesday, June 4, 2014 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Final Rites were conducted at the funeral home, Wednesday at 1 p.m. The Rev. Jim Murphy officiated and interment followed at the Maplewood Cemetery at Elkins, WV. The Lohr & Barb Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements for Lucille Dumire Kight.
