Mrs. Mildred Lucy Carr, 96, a current resident of Cortland Acres, Thomas, WV and former resident of Virginia Beach, Virginia entered into rest on Saturday, December 14, 2013. She had been in declining health over the past few years and in the end succumbed quietly.
She was born December 13, 1917 in Coketon, WV, a daughter of the late John and Nellie Vengen. She graduated from Thomas High School in 1936 and married Shirley Woodrow Carr on October 31, 1936. They had no children. She was preceded in death by her husband Shirley who died in February 2006, two sisters Josephine Vengen and Anna Gotinsky, three sister in-laws, Rose Marie Carr, Lorraine Carr and Jeanaleah Sibel, and five brothers Walter, Stanley, Albert, Adolph and John Vengen. She is survived by one sister Loretta Cooper of Canaan Valley, Davis, WV, and one brother Joe Vengen of Hope, New Jersey. Mildred owned and operated a Beauty Salon in Norfolk, VA for forty five years. She had a playful outgoing personality and enjoyed her clients at West Gent Beauty Salon. She loved to laugh and entertain her customers, and always offered them advice and sweet snacks. She brought her love of people to Cortland Acres often teasing fellow patients and staff. She always maintained a cheerful easy going disposition. She and her husband were members of the First Presbyterian Church of Norfolk, VA and prepared Communion for many years.
Friends were received at Hinkle Funeral Home on Tuesday Dec. 17, 2013 from 10 until 11 a.m. followed by a graveside service at Rose Hill Cemetery, Thomas, WV with Rev. David Shaffer officiating. Hinkle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. www.hinklefuneralhome.com
