RICHARD PHARES “RICH” MAUZY, a gentleman and a gentle-man, passed from this life on Thursday, August 16, 2018 at Cortland Acres Rehabilitation Center at Thomas, WV, at the age of 94 years.
He was born Tuesday, September 11, 1923 at Cass, a son of the late Michael “Mike” and Hattie Susan Vance Mauzy. He had never married.
Those left behind to cherish his precious memory are his brother, Paul Stanley Mauzy, Sr.; one niece, Lisa Wilfong and husband David of Parsons; one nephew, Paul Mauzy, Jr. and wife Laura Zick-Mauzy; four great nephews, J.D. Armstrong of Morgantown, Dustin Mauzy of Reedsville, Brad Stevens of Parsons and Tyler Mauzy of Thomas; one great niece, Melissa Sexton of Parsons; ten great-great nephews and nieces, Anthony and Jacob Gwynn, Rylan, Keaton and Greyson Sexton, Braden and Elaina Armstrong, Wesley and Leanna Mauzy and Austin Mauzy; and two great-great-great nephew and niece, Liam and Copeland Gwynn; and several cousins.
He was preceded in death by one brother, John Carl Mauzy; two sisters, Virginia Alice Mauzy and Mary Catherine Mauzy; and one nephew, Michael Mauzy.
He was a graduate of Parsons High School with the class of 1943. He immediately served his country by enlisting in the United States Army Air Force. Richard was a top gunner on the B24 Bomber during World War II in Germany and willingly shared war stories with all who were interested. He was owner and operator of the Mauzy’s Meat Market for years and he also served the Parsons community as a butcher for the former A & P Grocery Store. In his later years, Richard enjoyed watching Jeopardy and Lawrence Welk and walking and visiting people within the community. He was very thoughtful and generous.
The family received friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. Final rites were conducted at the funeral home on Monday, August 20, 2018 at 11 a.m. The Rev. William R. Brown officiated, and interment followed at the Parsons City Cemetery at Parsons, WV, where the H.W. Daniels Post #29 American Legion, the Tygart Valley Post #3647 Veterans of Foreign War and the Tucker County Veterans Association conducted full military honors.
