Virginia Naoma Bonner Stokes, age 89 years, a former resident of Parsons, WV departed this life late Monday evening, January 9, 2017 at Nella’s Nursing Home at Elkins, WV with her loving family at her side. She had been in declining health. She previously was a resident at Colonial Place at Elkins, WV.
She was born Saturday, February 12, 1927 at Lanesville, WV a daughter of the late Willie J. and Gertrude Flanagan Bonner. On September 15, 1947 at Red House, MD she was married to Foster Clyde “Dick” Stokes, who preceded her in death January 19, 1974. Surviving are one son Richard C. Stokes and wife Madonna of Elkins; and one daughter, Linda L. Fredrick and husband John of Morgantown.
Virginia was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Preceding her in death is one infant brother; and one special sister, Dorothy Louise Bonner, who departed this life on June 15, 2016.
She attended the schools of Tucker County. Virginia was a very caring person and when her Mother became ill with Multiple Sclerosis, she left school to stay home and care for her. She was a caregiver to other members of her immediate family over the years.
She enjoyed gardening and growing flowers, but what brought her the most pleasure was cooking and baking for her family. The apple trees in her yard provided her family with many cobblers, pies and plenty of fresh apple sauce. Virginia had several recipes that were “family favorites.”
She attended, and was an active member of the Hambleton Church of the Brethren and upon its closure; she attended the Parsons Church of God.
Virginia enjoyed spending time with her family. She enjoyed reading her Bible and she loved listening to Gospel music. She had the opportunity, along with her family, to attend Bill Gaither Concerts and that was a true highlight for her to see some of the singers in person that she listened to each week.
The family received friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m, Thursday, January 12, 2017. A funeral service was conducted at the funeral home parlor, Thursday, at 1 p.m. The Rev. Eli D. Hostetler officiated and interment followed at the Parsons City Cemetery at Parsons, WV.
