Ward Maree Moats, age 88 years, a resident of the Clover Run Community, St. George, WV departed this life early Sunday morning, October 14, 2018 at his home. He had been in his usual health and death was unexpected.
He was born Wednesday, July 16, 1930 at Grafton, WV, a son of the late Jerry Ward and Nettie Lou Saffel Moats. On July 21, 1951 at Oakland, MD, he was married to the former Velma Emogene Varner, who preceded him in death May 25, 2013. They had celebrated sixty-one years of marriage.
Surviving are one son, William “Bill” Moats and wife Sharon of Clover Run; one daughter, Mildred “Millie” Marie Shaffer and husband Tom of Clover Run; four grandchildren, Kristi Wolford and husband David of Fairmont, Tommy Shaffer of Morgantown, Travis William Moats and wife Chelsea and Scott Wesley Moats, all of Philippi; and four great grandchildren, Zachariah and Tristan Wolford of Fairmont and Emma and Easton Moats of Philippi.
Preceding him in death is his twin brother, Burlen Moats.
He attended the Huffman School at Laurel Creek. He was a Veteran of the United States Marines, where he was stationed in Puerto Rico during the Korean Conflict. He was a Timber Cutter, an employee of the former Lamberts Chevrolet for over thirty-two years and the West Virginia Department of Highways for seven years, where he was a mechanic. He grew up in the Fairview Church at Moatsville and was a member of the Union Chapel United Methodist Church, where he was a Sunday school Superintendent for many years. Following church, Mr. and Mrs. Moats would visit with people who were unable to make it out. Mr. Moats enjoyed mechanic work and cutting wood.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday, October 18, 2018 at 1 p.m. The Rev. Brad Barton and The Rev. Neil Parsons will officiate and interment will follow at the Cross Roads Cemetery in the Tacy Community, where the H.W. Daniels Post #29 American Legion, the Tygart Valley Post #3647 Veterans of Foreign War and the Tucker Co. Veterans Assoc. will conduct full military honors.
