Letter to the Editor

Hello,

I have been a resident of Tucker County my entire life. I love this town, my friends and family are here. Now that I am getting older some things are different. Not just for me but others as well.

I am not looking to be treated differently or better than anyone else, but over half the businesses here are not handicap accessible. This makes it hard for me to live an ‘ordinary’ day-to-day life.

For example, the Post Office is not obeying federal law to comply to have accessibility to their business. Someone started this battle 10 years ago or so. We should have all fought with them to help everyone in our community!

In order to go in to a pizza place, I have to enter through the back because there are only steps in the front. I’m happy that at least I can get inside to enjoy a meal with friends and family, but accessibility needs to change.

Even if you put a sign out front, offering to deliver to me or bring it out to my car, that isn’t the same as me going in to enjoy the company of others instead of eating alone at home again!

I know this can’t be fixed tomorrow, but this is 2022 and within the next three months I believe this town could do some remodeling for all of us. Change is needed and you can help make it happen. Please call the mayor or the city council to get this started as soon as possible!

Thank you for your time and reading this,

Christina Carpenter
