Well I am taking on my newest challenge of trying to raise five baby rabbits. My neighbors got their kids two bunnies and were told they were both females. SURPRISE! It turns out they are brother and sister and now mommy and daddy. I tried to tell the owner that one was a boy and she would not listen. So they go on vacation and ask my other neighbor to take care of the animals while they are gone. She comes to my door in a panic and doesn’t know what to do when she found the babies. The mother is still young and did not want anything to do with the babies. She had not made a nest or anything. I couldn’t see them just lay there and die so I am trying to get them through this tough time.
I may not succeed but when the owner was notified, she basically stated, “Just get rid of them before the kids see them.” If I could have gotten hold of her I think I would have smacked her. The animals are in a cage that is too small, it is built in a way that it can’t be cleaned properly and I just hate to see animals in these conditions. Momma Said, “It is better to try and fail than not try at all.”
I do not like to see animals in small confined places. These same people have two chickens as well as the rabbits and they are in similar cage conditions. The cage was okay for chicks but these birds are now half grown and the space is not adequate. It is filthy as well and not ideal conditions for any animal to live in. I am trying to line up homes for these animals before I try to talk the neighbors into giving them up. If it were up to the husband he would get rid of them so I have to work on the wife and that might be a challenge. Momma Said, “Nothing ventured, nothing gained.”
I will try my best when I see an animal in distress and I only hope I can get the little pinkies through without their mother. Wish me luck because this is a first for me. I have bottle fed calves before so this is new ground for me. Also I got good news from the vet that Bailey’s mass that was removed was not cancer. She is doing well with another scar to chalk up to success.
