Tiddly Winks, Marbles, Jacks, Barrel of Monkeys, Pick-Up-Sticks, Lincoln Logs, what happened to the games that taught us strategy, dexterity, and logic? Now all we have are games that everyone tries to see how many people you can kill. Momma Said, “The only dexterity you get is to see how fast your thumbs can move.”
We had games where kids actually interacted with one another, not video games where you don’t even have to get out of bed. We played with an Etch-a-Sketch for hours to see how well we could draw. Now all you have to do is push a button and the computer draws the picture for you.
We built houses with Lincoln Logs that Abe Lincoln himself would have been proud to live in. And the monkey chains we could assemble would be so long, we would have to stand up and try to hook the next one. My favorite game was Jacks. The only drawback was if my brother swiped the ball. Momma Said, “And the amazing thing was we never lost any of the pieces to our games.”
I guess kids today would think those games are not exciting enough, not enough action, no explosions or bombs going off. We had just as much fun without the violence. Actually, we didn’t know much about violence. I remember the Vietnam War was happening and the evening news was full of the causality count and as a child, I could not comprehend that many people being killed each day.
I long for quieter times and peace for everyone. I wish children today could experience the fun we had with such simple things to occupy our time. Momma Said, “I think they are missing out on a part of life that everyone should experience.” At least this recipe should get everyone together for a good treat.
