This is a photo of Elmer Ellsworth Snyder (1867-1940). He was the third child of Captain Sampson and Elizabeth Bonner Snyder. Elmer was one of the early merchants of Davis. He was often called “the strong man of the community”. He was a tall man as well as being a strong man physically and could easily defend himself if need be. He was the town policeman. His first wife was Maggie Payne; they had a son, Dixon. Maggie was giving birth to a second child when things went wrong and Maggie and the female child (Maggie Leota) both died in 1893. He then married Sarah Frances Harrison. Elmer and Sarah moved to Morgantown. They had the following children: Elmer Harry, Myrtle (1901-1903), Anna Belle married Brooks Collins, Harriett Elizabeth married Earle Friend, Frederick (1907-1929), Franklin Sampson (1908-1937).
