Thornton F. Hebb (1821-1911). Married Catherine Sanders in 1842. Catherine died in 1853 and Thornton then married Mary Ann Lipscomb. Thornton had a farm of 175 acres 5 miles below St. George of which 75 were improved.


He held several offices in the county and was on the Board of Supervisors in 1866, and served as President of the Board of Education for 12 years. He also served in the Union Army from 1861 to 1865. Thornton is buried at Macedonia. Thornton was the son of Thomas F. Hebb who was the son of William Hebb (1757 – 1833). William married Jemima Washington who was the niece of President George Washington. William was sent to America as a Revolutionary War soldier having fought first with the British, and later deserted to fight for the American Colonies. William Hebb served in the battle of Yorktown, Virginia when the British were defeated. William and Jemima are buried near Rowlesburg. Ideas or comments contact Tim Turner (304) 478-3389
