The school calendar for 2018-2019 was presented at the April 3 Board of Education meeting.  One difference in the upcoming year’s schedule was spring break days are marked as “Outside School Environment” days instead of “Out of Calendar” days.

“We generally have to use those to make up snow days,” Superintendent Campbell said.

As the result of teacher feedback, a planning day was added to the beginning of the school year on Monday, August 13.  Six days are scheduled for faculty senate.

The board presented a two-year, $125,664 contract to Superintendent Campbell.  The contract was approved and signed.

The school system is lacking substitute bus drivers.  The lack of substitute drivers puts pressure on the definitiveness of field trips taking place.  “Between lack of substitutes and a lack of a healthy fleet, at this stage of the game, all these trips, we’re looking very closely to make sure we can accommodate,” Superintendent Campbell said.

The board approved two use of transportation requests. Two buses and drivers are authorized for wedding transportation on June 9.  The USDA and Forest Service will use one bus and a driver during their Youth Conservation Corp program from June 10 to July 28.

The board receives payment for the bus and driver use. “We don’t pay for anything regarding this use,” Superintendent Campbell said.

Five student transfer requests were approved.  All of these students were already in the county school system but required board approval.

The board approved Sharon Eye’s retirement.  Eye worked as a cook at Tucker Valley Elementary Middle School.  “She’s been with us a very long time,” Superintendent Campbell said.  President Turner approved her retirement, humorously adding, “Only if we can find another cook, if we can’t, she’ll have to stay.”

Make up days for snow and work stoppage days are as follows: Wednesday, May 23, Thursday, May 24, Friday, May 25, Tuesday, May 29, Wednesday, May 30, Thursday, May 31, Friday, June 1, Monday, June 4, Tuesday, June 5, Wednesday, June 6, Thursday, June 7, and Friday, June 8.

The next Board of Education meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 17 at 4:30 at Davis Thomas Elementary Middle School.
