THOMAS – Two programs at Davis/Thomas Elementary Middle School will be able to provide students with a little more, thanks to the generosity of the Canaan Valley Woman’s Club of Davis. Music instructor Denver Gaydon and art instructor Chelsi Primavero were awarded $500 each Tuesday, and the funds were presented by the club’s President Joan Armbruster.
“These funds are given so the instructors can use them in their program to further music and art education,” Armbruster said. “We are aware that those two programs are frequently the first ones cut because of budget constraints. So we have decided to supplement their programs. This is the second year we have provided assistance to these programs.”
Davis/Thomas Elementary Middle School students gathered in the gymnasium for the presentation. Armbruster asked the teachers what their plans were for the money.
“I am going to buy new paint brushes,” Primavero said. “We need quite a bit,” Gaydon said. “We need to update our percussion equipment as well as some general music stuff.”
“We thank you so much,” Principal Alicia Lambert said. “The money will be well-spent.
“We just want to thank the Woman’s Club for their generous donation,” Lambert said. “Our music and art departments benefit from this every year. I know they were both very happy to receive the money.”
Other members of the Canaan Valley Woman’s Club of Davis making the presentation include Vice president Cathy Knight, Secretary Pat Gilchrest and Treasurer Katie Morvay.
Armbruster said the funds come from raffling a quilt, made by several of the members of the Canaan Valley Woman’s club of Davis. She said other prizes in the raffle include a basket filled with West Virginia items and a quilted table runner.
“We sell the raffle tickets individually,” Armbruster said. “We set up a table in Shop n Save and we also sell tickets during the Run for It during the Leaf Peeper’s Weekend. We also sell pepper jelly.”
Armbruster said the pepper jelly sale helps with donations to the Tactics training at Canaan Valley Resort, the Blackwater Ministerial Food Pantry and the Blizzard Boxes for the Tucker County Senior Citizens.
“We meet the second Thursday afternoon of the month,” Armbruster said. “We are welcome to anyone who would like to participate.”
