Lauren Arbaugh of Eastern West Virginia Community and Technical College presented information to the Tucker County Planning Commission on the apprenticeship programs and workforce and education programs provided at Eastern West Virginia University.
The programs are open to all West Virginia residents and provide grants and scholarships of up to $2,000 annually for most programs. To qualify for the program, applicants must be West Virginia residents, have completed high school, and be free of education-related debt.
The workforce and continuing education division at Eastern WV Community & Technical College has expanded to more than 50 programs and course offerings, covering a wide range of fields including carpentry, electrical work, HVAC, medical and health programs, construction trades, and networking and information technology. The courses combine online instruction with required hands-on training. Most of the hands-on sessions are currently being held in Moorefield. However, the College would like to branch out into other counties with hands-on sessions.
Several new programs were added to the Eastern West Virginia College schedule in June. The new training opportunities will include veterinary technician assistance, surgical technology, and an administrative assistant track with bookkeeping and QuickBooks training.
We discussed opportunities to bring some of these in-person, hands-on classes to Tucker County, with the Thomas Community Center suggested as a potential location.
Employers or potential students interested in obtaining such career-enhancing training may wish to look up Eastern West Virginia Community & Technical College on the web at https://easternwv.edu/ or contact Lauren Arbaugh at lauren.arbaugh@easternwv.edu.
