The golf team competed in the Class A Region II Tournament at Canaan Valley Resort on Monday, October 6th, facing off against five other schools. Heading into the event, the top three teams in the region were separated by just four strokes, so Tucker knew they had a strong opportunity to finish in the top two and qualify for States as a team.
For over half the match, the Mt. Lions held the top position, with Tygarts Valley close behind. As the round progressed, Tygarts Valley steadily chipped away and eventually surpassed Tucker for the first-place position. Pendleton County remained in the mix, sitting in third for most of the match, and it all came down to the final hole, where they overtook the Mt. Lions for second place, leaving Tucker just two strokes back in third.
Although the Mt. Lions didn’t achieve their goal of qualifying for the State Tournament as a team, there were plenty of positives to take away. First-year player Carter Wilt, along with juniors Nate Davis and Drew Simmons, each had one of their best rounds of the season. Davis finished with low medalist honors, shooting a 79, while Simmons was just one stroke behind with an 80.
With the team spots already locked up, Nate and Drew secured both individual qualifying spots, earning them the opportunity to compete at Oglebay Resort’s Speidel Golf Club in the 2025 WVSSAC State Golf Championship. Since the team did not qualify, they will compete as individuals, aiming to win the individual title and finish in the top 8 overall to earn All-State honors.
Round 1 will take place on Tuesday (10/14), with Round 2 concluding the championship on Wednesday (10/15). You can follow their progress using the WVSSAC Golf app.
