Noah Broadwater drove in six runs – three in each game of the baseball doubleheader – Sunday after-noon as Garrett College swept the College of Southern Maryland.

Madden wins opener; Broadwater goes 4-for-4 in nightcap

La Plata, MD – Sophomore shortstop Noah Broadwater went 4-for-4, including a run-scoring single as part of a six-run fifth inning, Sunday afternoon as Garrett College held off the College of Southern Maryland, 8-7, to complete a baseball doubleheader sweep.

“He’s the returner who drove in the most runs for us last season,” said GC head coach Eric Hallenbeck of Broadwater, who had three RBI in each game of the doubleheader. “He also played well defensively – he just had an all-around great day for us.”

The Lakers won the opener, 6-1, as winning pitcher Bryce Madden yielded the one run on four hits with four strikeouts and a walk over six innings.

“Bryce had command of all of his pitches, challenged hitters, and competed all day like he normally does,” said Hallenbeck of his sophomore right-hander.

Broadwater’s three-run, third-inning double – on a 3-2 pitch – and Meyer Cabrera’s two-run single as part of a three-run seventh were the only hits in the opener by the Lakers, who also benefited from six walks.

“That’s really maximizing your hits,” said Hallenbeck, noting the Lakers’ two hits drove in a total of five runs in Game 1.

Garrett trailed, 4-1, in the nightcap before putting together its six-run fifth inning. That uprising included just two hits – Broadwater’s run-scoring single and Bryden Green’s RBI double – and was aided by a pair of bases loaded walks.

Kai Canson, the third of four Garrett pitchers in the nightcap, earned the victory with a pair of scoreless innings while yielding one walk and striking out two batters.

Trailing 8-4, CSM mounted a seventh-inning rally. Reliever Keaton Walsh allowed three inherited runners to score on what Hallenbeck characterized as “a couple of bloop hits,” but Walsh came up with the final two outs via strikeout to earn a save.

The Lakers improved to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in NJCAA Division II Region 20-West with the sweep.

“Any time you win on the road in Region 20 is great,” remarked Hallenbeck.
