HAMBLETON – #3 Tucker County started the busy 4 game week with a home game on Senior Night against Notre Dame Feb 17th. The Lady Mt. Lions exploded out of the gate and never looked back, picking up the win 73-31.
The Lady Mt. Lions wasted no time getting the offense rolling on senior night and jetted out to a 19-6 lead after one. In the second quarter Tucker County continued to get good looks on offense and score 20 points in the quarter to increase the lead to 22 points at the half 39-17. Defense was the key in the third quarter as the Lady Irish only managed 4 points in the period and the Lady Mt. Lions put the game away with a 24 point quarter to lead 63-21 after three quarters. The reserve players finished the game in the fourth and Tucker County got the win 73-31.
Stephanie Betler led Tucker County with 17 points, 8 assists, 3 steals and Bekah Simmons finished with 15 points, 5 rebounds. Madison Mullenax added 14 points, 6 rebounds and Elizabeth Nichols had 8 points, 4 rebounds. Aiyana Kachmarek led the Lady Mt. Lions in rebounding with 8 boards.
Seniors that were honored before the game were: Stephanie Betler, Savannah Ambrose, Bekah Simmons and Mariah Bowley.
PHILIPPI – The Lady Mt. Lions traveled to Philip-Barbour on Feb 18th and used a quick start and strong defensive to pick up the 51-23.
The defense for Tucker County was outstanding to start the game as the Lady Colts were held scoreless in the first quarter and the Lady Mt. Lions scored 15 points to take an early 15-0 lead after one. In the second quarter Tucker County again outpaced Philip-Barbour 12-8 to take a halftime lead 27-8. The third quarter was dominated by Tucker County to put the game away and make way for the reserve players as the Lady Mt. Lions took a 41-15 lead after three. The fourth quarter belonged to the reserve players as they outscored the Lady Colts 10-8 to close out the Tucker County victory by the final score of 51-23.
Stephanie Betler finished the game with 10 points for Tucker County and Madison Mullenax added 9 points, 7 rebounds. Elizabeth Nichols had 8 points, 7 rebounds for the Lady Mt. Lions in the win. The Tucker County JV picked up the win also 57-51.
HAMBLETON – On Feb 20th Southern, MD visited Tucker County for a much anticipated matchup. The Lady Mt. Lions outscored Southern 12-10 in overtime to pick up the big win 54-52.
The first quarter was an indication of what the game was going to be like throughout the night as both teams exchanged baskets back and forth but Southern held the slim advantage after the first quarter 12-10. Both teams played defense great in the second quarter as neither team could get the shots to fall and each team scored 11 points in the quarter to make the halftime score 23-21 Southern at the half. The third quarter would belong to the Tucker County defense as they held the Lady Rams to just 3 points in the quarter and held them scoreless for 4 minute span to build a 32-26 lead after three. Southern fought back late in the fourth quarter to take a 2 point lead late in the game 42-40. Elizabeth Nichols then connected on 2 foul shots to tie the game 42-42 and Southern could not get a shot to fall as time expired to force the game to overtime. The Lady Mt. Lions took the lead in overtime and would not let it go as Southern had a chance to tie the game late, but Savannah Ambrose blocked the shot attempt to give Tucker County the big win 54-52. Stephanie Betler led Tucker County with 31 points and Elizabeth Nichols added 10 points, 4 blocks. Savannah Ambrose finished with 5 rebounds, 5 blocks, 4 assists. The Lady Mt. Lions JV team started the night with a win 52-45.
HAMBLETON – The Lady Mt. Lions closed out the regular season with a win over East Hardy 61-35 and pushed their winning streak to 6.
Tucker County jumped out to a quick lead in the first quarter as the Lady Mt. Lions hit 5 three point baskets and led 22-2 after one. The Lady Cougars fought back in the second quarter and cut into the Tucker County lead to trail at the half 57-14. The third quarter would belong to the home team as Tucker County outscored East Hardy 20-10 in the third to lead 47-24 after three. The reserve players for Tucker County finished the game as the Lady Mt. Lions picked up the victory 61-35.
Bekah Simmons led the Lady Mt. Lions with 11 points and Madison Mullenax added 10 points. Aiyana Kachmarek had 6 rebounds and 4 blocks for the Lady Mt. Lions. The Tucker County JV team got the win also 47-10 and finished the regular season 15-0.
Tucker County finished the regular season with a record of 16-4. The Lady Mt. Lions will start Sectional play tonight Feb 26th at Elkins High School against Union, game time will be 5:45. Tygarts Valley and Notre Dame will square off in game 2 tonight. The winners will then face off on Friday at Elkins High School at 7pm for the Sectional Championship.
