ELKINS – #3 Tucker County started Sectional play on Thursday Feb 27th at Elkins High School against Union. The Lady Mt. Lions used a strong first half to pick up the 70-35 win.
Tucker County started hot early and jumped out to an 18-8 lead after the first quarter. The Lady Mt. Lions extended the lead in the second as they outscored the Lady Tigers 21-4 in the period to take a commanding 39-12 lead at the half.
In the third quarter Tucker County continued the domination as the Lady Mt. Lions scored 22 points compared to 8 points for Union and after three quarters Tucker County led 61-20. The reserve players finished the game in the fourth for the Lady Mt. Lions as they picked up the win 70-35 over Union.
Stephanie Betler led Tucker County with 17 points, 7 assists and Madison Mullenax added 11 points, 9 rebounds. Savannah Ambrose had 7 rebounds and 8 blocks for the Lady Mt. Lions in the win.
ELKINS – The Lady Mt. Lions faced off against Notre Dame for the third time this season in the Sectional Championship on Friday Feb 28th. The result of the game was the same as the last two meetings as Tucker County used a dominating defense to shutdown the Lady Irish to capture the Sectional Championship 52-19.
The defense for Tucker County was outstanding as Notre Dame was unable to score in the first quarter and the Lady Mt. Lions led after one 14-0. The second quarter went the same for the Lady Irish as they managed just 2 foul shot conversions in the quarter as Tucker County outscored Notre Dame 18-2 to take a commanding 32-2 lead at the half. The Lady Mt. Lions did not disappoint in the third as they gave up 2 more foul shots in the third and scored 14 more points to lead 46-4 after three. The Tucker County reserves finished the game in the fourth quarter and the Lady Mt. Lions captured the Sectional Championship 52-19. Tucker County held the Lady Irish to just 4 field goals in the game and they all came in the fourth quarter. The Lady Mt. Lions hit a season high 9 three point baskets in the game.
Stephanie Betler finished the game with 13 points, 5 assists to lead Tucker County and Madison Mullenax added 12 points, 5 assists. Elizabeth Nichols had 11 points for the Lady Mt. Lions and Bekah Simmons led in rebounding with 5 boards. This was the 8th straight win for Tucker County.
Tucker County(18-4) will host Pendleton County tonight for the Regional Championship at 7pm. The Lady Mt. Lions won both matchups in the regular season, 58-30 at home and 49-37 at Pendleton County.
