PHILIPPI – The Tucker County Girls’ basketball team opened their season at “AA” Philip-Barbour on Wednesday December 3rd and picked up the win 64-35.
The Lady Mt. Lions got off to a quick start and led after one quarter 16-7. In the second quarter Tucker County continued to play great defense and outscored the Lady Colts 18-6 to take a 34-13 lead in the locker room at the half.
The Lady Colts outscored Tucker County in the third quarter 13-10 to make the score 44-26 Lady Mt. Lions after three quarters. Then Tucker County got their offense moving again as they finished the game out pacing Philip-Barbour 20-9 to get the blowout victory 64-35.
Sydney Nestor led the way for Tucker County with 17 points, 8 rebounds, 5 steals and 5 assists. Aiyana Kachmarek followed with 9 points and 8 rebounds and Madison Mullenax and Olivia Miller added 8 points each. The Lady Mt. Lions JV team fell in a tight contest 38-34.
HAMBLETON – The Lady Mt. Lions finished out the week by hosting St. Marys on Friday December 5th. St. Marys defeated Tucker County in the Semi-finals last season ending the Lady Mt. Lions season at the State Tournament. Tucker County would get revenge as they picked up the victory 49-39.
Tucker County jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, but the Lady Devils fought back and the score was 7-5 Tucker County after the first quarter. The second quarter was played even as both team exchanged baskets throughout the quarter and the Lady Mt. Lions held a slim 20-16 lead at the half.
The defensive pressure turned up for Tucker County in the third and the offense started rolling as the Lady Mt. Lions outpaced St. Marys 20-7 in the quarter to take a commanding 40-23 lead after three. The Tucker County lead would expand to as many as 20 early in the fourth, but the Lady Devils fought back to outscore Tucker County 15-9 in the quarter. The visiting team could not complete the comeback and the Lady Mt. Lions picked up a big win at home by the final score of 49-39.
Sydney Nestor led the Lady Mt. Lions with 18 points, 14 rebounds and 6 steals. Madison Mullenax and Elizabeth Nichols finished with 11 points each and Olivia Miller added 12 rebounds in the game for Tucker County. The Tucker County Girls’ JV team got the win in the first contest 35-25.
The Lady Mt. Lions will return to action this Thursday December 11th at home against PVC foe Tygarts Valley. The JV game starts at 5:45pm with the Varsity game to follow.
