CAMP KIDD – The Tucker County Softball team continued Sectional play in an Elimination game at home against East Hardy on Monday May 8th. The Lady Mt. Lions got the scoring started in the bottom of the 1st inning with 3 runs to give Tucker County the early 3-0 lead. The home team would add 1 run in the 2nd inning and 1 run in the 4th inning to put the score to 5-0 Lady Mt. Lions after 4 innings. Tucker County then added 3 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning to end the game by Mercy Rule by the score of 8-0.
The Lady Mt. Lions had 10 hits in the game. Katie Hicks led Tucker County at the plate with 2 hits, including a triple. Addie Hicks, Kate Simmons had 2 hits each in the contest. Autumn Russell(double), Rachel Felton, Raven Matthews and Corrinia Lipscomb added 1 hit each for Tucker County in the win. Paige Shaffer went the distance on the mound for the Lady Mt. Lions as she pitched a 1 hitter and had 6 strikeouts with the victory.
MOOREFIELD – The Lady Mt. Lions traveled to Moorefield on Wednesday May 10th for another Sectional Elimination game. The Lady Yellowjackets got off to a good start as they scored 1 run in the 2nd inning, 1 run in the 3rd inning and 1 run in the 4th inning to lead the game 3-0 through 4 innings. Tucker County then responded with 5 runs in the 5th inning, highlighted by a Corrinia Lipscomb homerun, to take a 5-3 lead after 5 innings. The Lady Mt. Lions then added 2 runs in the 6th inning to push the Tucker County lead to 7-3 after 6 innings. Moorefield then rallied in the bottom of the 7th inning as they scored 4 runs in the inning to tie the game at 7-7 to force extra innings. Both teams failed to score in the 8th inning to keep the score at 7-7. The Lady Mt. Lions then got a solo homerun to centerfield by Raven Matthews to make the score 8-7 Tucker County. Moorefield was unable to answer in the bottom of the 9th and the Lady Mt. Lions got the win to advance 8-7.
Tucker County collected 11 hits in the contest and were led at the plate by Raven Matthews and Corrinia Lipscomb with 1 homerun each. Matthews had 2 hits total in the game. Katie Hicks(double), Ava Shaffer(double) and Addie Hicks also added 2 hits each in the victory. Kate Simmons and Paige Shaffer chipped in with 1 hit each in the contest. Paige Shaffer went all 9 innings to collect the win on the mound for the Lady Mt. Lions.
PETERSBURG – Tucker County traveled to Petersburg for a Sectional Championship against Petersburg, where the Lady Mt. Lions would need 2 wins against the Lady Vikings to claim the Sectional Championship. Tucker County started the game with the bats hot as they scored 3 runs in the top of the 1st inning. The Lady Vikings answered with 3 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning to tie the game at 3-3 after 1 inning. Petersburg would surge ahead in the 2nd inning as they scored 5 runs to make the score 8-3 Lady Vikings after 2 innings. The homestanding Lady Vikings would then score 3 runs in the 3rd inning to push the Petersburg lead to 11-3 after 3 innings. Tucker County could not respond and the game ended in 5 innings with the final score of 11-3. The win gave Petersburg the Sectional Championship and ended the Lady Mt. Lions season.
Corrinia Lipscomb took the loss for Tucker County on the mound and Ava Shaffer entered the game in relief. The Lady Mt. Lions had 3 hits in the game. Ava Shaffer, Corrinia Lipscomb and Autumn Russell had 1 hit each for Tucker County in the loss.
