KEYSER – The Tucker County Girls’ Basketball team traveled to Keyser High School to compete in the Lady Tornado Holiday Mixer on Monday December 29th against Grafton. The Mt. Lions lead throughout the game and picked up the close win 36-34.
Tucker County jumped out to a lead in the first quarter and took a 13-8 advantage after one quarter of play. The Lady Bearcats fought back in the second quarter and outscored the Lady Mt. Lions 12-7 in the period to tie the game at the half 20-20. The Tucker County defense then stepped up in the third quarter as they held Grafton to just 5 points in the quarter and scored 10 points to take a 30-25 lead after the third quarter. The Lady Bearcats fought back again in the fourth quarter and took the lead by 1 point late in the contest. Sydney Nestor then got a steal for Tucker County and made a layup to put the Lady Mt. Lions ahead. Tucker County held Grafton secured the rebound and made one more foul shot to pick up the close victory 36-34.
Sydney Nestor finished the game for Tucker County with 18 points, 11 rebounds and 7 steals. Elizabeth Nichols added 7 points, 6 rebounds and Aiyana Kachmarek led the Lady Mt. Lions in rebounding with 8 boards.
KEYSER – The Lady Mt. Lions traveled back to Keyser High School on Tuesday December 30th to face Lincoln in the last day of the Lady Tornado Holiday Mixer. Tucker County suffered their first loss of the season in the game 55-49.
Both teams started out slow on offense and the defense dominated the first quarter as Lincoln led after one quarter 7-5. The Lady Cougars would outscore the Lady Mt. Lions in the second quarter 15-13 to take a 22-18 lead into the locker room at the half. Tucker County got the offense going in the third quarter as they fought back to tie the score at 34 at the end of the third quarter. The Lady Mt. Lions carried the momentum into the fourth quarter and took a four point lead at one point in the fourth quarter. Lincoln then fought back late in the game and took the lead with less than a minute left in the game. The Lady Cougars made their foul shots down the stretch to pull out the come from behind victory 55-49.
Sydney Nestor finished with 15 points, 6 rebounds and Aiyana Kachmarek added 12 points, 10 rebounds for Tucker County. Madison Mullenax scored 10 points and Elizabeth Nichols had 9 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists for the Lady Mt. Lions in the loss.
Tucker County(6-1) will host East Hardy tonight for a Varsity only contest at 6:30pm and then they will travel to Notre Dame on Friday Jan 9th for a Varsity only contest at 5:45pm with the Boys’ varsity game against Notre Dame after at 7:30pm.
