LADY MT. LIONS WIN SECTIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

HAMBLETON – The Tucker County Girls’ Basketball team started the Sectional Playoffs on Thursday February 21st against Pendleton County at home. The Lady Mt. Lions built an early lead and cruised to a 66-25 victory.

Tucker County came out firing as they built a 15-8 lead after one quarter of play. The second quarter also belonged to the Lady Mt. Lions as they exploded to outpaced the Lady Wildcats 21-4 in the second to make the halftime score 36-12.

The defense for Tucker County continued as they held Pendleton County to 4 points in the third quarter and the Lady Mt. Lions scored 19 points to make the score 55-16 after three. The reserve players would finish things in the fourth quarter for the Lady Mt. Lions took home the Sectional Semi-Final victory by the final score of 66-25 over Pendleton County.

Tucker County’s Riley Evans led all scorers with 14 points and McKinley Murphy added 9 points, 8 assists, 4 steals. Katie Surguy had 9 points and Terra Kuhn chipped in with 8 points, 8 rebounds, 5 steals for the Lady Mt. Lions. London Hood pitched in with 8 points also for Tucker County in the win.

PETERSBURG – The Lady Mt. Lions traveled to Petersburg High School on Saturday February 23rd for an afternoon tilt with Moorefield for the Region 2 Section 2 Championship. Tucker County controlled the game throughout and took home the victory to earn the Sectional Championship by the final score of 57-51.

The first quarter was close as Tucker County led throughout and after one the Lady Mt. Lions held a 11-8 advantage. The defense for Tucker County then stepped up in the second quarter as the Lady Mt. Lions held Moorefield to 5 points and score 10 points to extend the Lady Mt. Lions lead to 21-13 at the half.

The third quarter would also belong to Tucker County as they outscored the Lady Yellowjackets 23-10 to make the Tucker County lead 41-26 after three quarters of play. The Lady Mt. Lions would then build the lead to 18 points in the fourth before a late rally by Moorefield would not be enough as Tucker County took home the Sectional Championship Plaque by the final score of 57-51.

The Lady Mt. Lions were led by Terra Kuhn with 22 points, 16 rebounds as Kuhn score 10 of those points in the fourth quarter. McKinley Murphy added 12 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and Riley Evans chipped in with 8 points, 5 assists for Tucker County in the win. London Hood added 6 points, 5 assists and Aliyah Plum pulled down 7 rebounds for the Lady Mt. Lions. Tucker County outrebounded Moorefield 44-23 in the contest.

Tucker County(16-6) will host Notre Dame on Thursday February 28th for the Regional Championship with the winner to advance to the WV State Tournament next week. The game will tip at 7pm at Tucker County High School. For more info go to TuckerCountySports.Com.
