MOOREFIELD – Tucker County ran into a buzz saw at Moorefield on Friday Sept 20th and the Yellowjackets scored 19 unanswered points in the third and fourth quarter to get the win 33-14.
The game started out good for the Mt. Lions when Moorefield fumbled the opening kickoff and Tucker County recovered on the Yellowjackets 39 yard line. The Mt. Lions then went to work as their offense marched the ball down the field and scored on a 5 yard touchdown run by Seth Underwood with 7:39 left in the first quarter. The drive covered 39 yards on 10 plays. The extra point kick was good by Michael Callaway to make the score 7-0 Tucker County.
Moorefield would then get the ball on offense and move the ball down the field but, the Yellowjackets fumbled the ball once again on the 7th play of the drive and Tucker County recovered on their own 11 yard line. The Mt. Lions moved the ball to their own 40 yard line, but was not able to sustain the drive and had to punt the ball back to Moorefield. The Yellowjackets then got their act together as their offense scored a touchdown after a 7 play 91 yard drive with 8:44 left in the second quarter. After a Tucker County punt Moorefield would strike again from 2 yards out with 32 seconds left in the first half to cap a 15 play 71 yard drive. The extra point kick was good and the Yellowjackets led 14-7 at the half.
Tucker County received the second half and the offense got back on track. The Mt. Lions took the ball down the field on a 9 play 74 yard drive highlighted by a 22 yard Underwood pass to Logan Fridley on a 2nd down and 14. Zach Armstrong finished the drive with a 3 yard touchdown run and the extra point kick was good by Callaway to even the score at 14 with 7:42 left in the third quarter.
The Mt. Lions then kicked an onside kick and recovered at the Moorefield 49 yard line. The Yellowjackets defense then stepped up to intercept the Tucker County pass and stop the drive. Moorefield started the drive at the Mt. Lions 49 yard line and wasted no time. On a 4th and 3 play the Yellowjackets got a 20 yard touchdown pass play to take the lead. The PAT failed to keep the score at 20-14. After another Tucker County punt Moorefield got the ball back at their own 34 yard line. Once again the Yellowjackets would score 6 plays later on an 11 yard pass play with 7 seconds left in the third quarter. The PAT failed again and the score was 26-14 Moorefield.
Again Tucker County was unable to move the ball and had to punt the ball back to Moorefield. This time the Yellowjackets only took 2 plays to reach the end zone on a 56 yard touchdown run with 9:44 left in the game. The Mt. Lions offense again gave the ball back to Moorefield on their next possession after a failed 4th down play. Moorefield could not finish their next drive as they fumbled again and Tucker County recovered at the Mt. Lions 10 yard line. Tucker County then punted the ball back to Moorefield and the home team ran out the clock to get the win with the final score of 33-14.
The Yellowjackets outgained the Mt. Lions 388 to 174 in total yardage and had 2 running backs go over 100 yards rushing. Tucker County’s Seth Underwood finished the game 7 of 12 passing for 75 yards and Zach Armstrong added 14 carries for 62 yards rushing. Tucker County(3-1) will travel to Philip-Barbour this Friday.
