Moorefield Spoils Homecoming With 24-7 Win Over Mt. Lions

PARSONS – The Tucker County football team hosted PVC rival Moorefield for Homecoming on Friday September 19th. The Yellowjackets held the Mt. Lions scoreless in the second half and turned an 8-7 halftime lead into a 24-7 win at Tucker County.

The Mt. Lions deferred their option to the second half after winning the opening coin toss. Both teams had trouble moving the ball on their first couple possessions. Moorefield then put together a long drive that stalled at the Mt. Lions 31 and Tucker County took over on downs. On the first play of the Mt. Lions next drive Daniel Kisamore connected with Michael Callaway on a 69 yard touchdown pass with 4:56 left in the first quarter. The extra point kick was good by Callaway to make the score 7-0 Tucker County. Moorefield then had to punt the ball back to the Mt. Lions on their next possession, but the punt would pin Tucker County deep in their own territory. The Yellowjacket then got pressure on Kisamore and force an intentional grounding penalty in the end zone that resulted in a safety and 2 points for Moorefield with 1:12 left in the first.

After the safety the Yellowjackets got the ball back on the free kick and went to work on offense. With 9:48 left in the second quarter Moorefield scored on a 26 yard touchdown pass to up their lead to 8-7 after a failed 2 point conversion. Both teams failed to sustain drives the rest of the second quarter and the first half ended with Moorefield leading by one at halftime 8-7.

Tucker County began the third quarter with the ball on offense, but had to punt the ball back to Moorefield after a stalled drive. The Yellowjackets stuck with the ground game in the second half and pounded the ball down the field on a drive that was capped off on a 26 yard touchdown run with 9:20 left in the third. The 2 point conversion was good to up the Moorefield lead to 16-7. Tucker County then responded with a drive that took the ball down to the Yellowjackets 36 yard line before a failed fourth down play gave the ball back to Moorefield with 5:20 left in the third quarter. A Moorefield punt would give the ball back to Tucker County with another chance to cut into the Yellowjackets lead. The Mt. Lions then got drove down inside the Moorefield 10 yard line on the next drive as the third quarter ended.

The beginning of the first quarter was disaster for the Mt. Lions as they fumbled the ball and Moorefield recovered to stop Tucker County once again. The Mt. Lions would hold the Yellowjackets and force a punt with 4:40 left in the contest. This time bad luck would strike the Mt. Lions again as they fumbled on the ensuing punt return and Moorefield recovered the ball at the Tucker County 40 yard line. The Yellowjackets then kept the ball on the ground again and would grind out a drive that resulted in a 4 yard touchdown run with 1:41 left in the contest. The 2 point conversion was good to extend the Moorefield lead to 24-7. The Mt. Lions were once again stopped on a fourth down play and the Yellowjackets ran out the clock to give the visitors the road victory by the final score of 24-7.

Daniel Kisamore finished the game for Tucker County with 124 yards passing and 27 yards rushing. Michael Callaway added 95 yards receiving for the Mt. Lions in the loss. Moorefield finished the game with 201 yards rushing and 65 yards passing. Tucker County had 124 yards passing and 33 yards rushing in the contest. Tucker County was outgained in total offense 266 to 157.
