BAKER – The Tucker County Boys had 4 players in double figures and every player scored as the Mt. Lions picked up the road victory at East Hardy last Wednesday Feb 5th 83-20.
In the first quarter Tucker County exploded for 27 points and held the home team to just 3 points and led 27-3 after one.
The second quarter did not get better for the Cougars as the Mt. Lions defense continued to produce turnovers as Tucker County outscored East Hardy 22-7 in the second to take a 49-10 lead into the half.
In the third quarter the Tucker County defense continued as East Hardy scored just 1 point in the quarter as the Mt. Lions led after three 73-11. The reserve players finished the game for Tucker County and the Mt. Lions picked up the impressive win 83-20.
Austin Zirk paced the Mt. Lions with 20 points and Ian Nichols added 13 points. Mitchell Mason finished with 10 points, 10 rebounds and Tyler Birchland added 11 points. Derek Zirk had 8 steals and 9 assists for Tucker County. The Mt. Lions JV team picked up the win also 66-28.
HAMBLETON – The Mt. Lions used a strong defensive effort on Friday Feb 7th to avenge one of their losses on the season with a 60-41 victory over Southern, MD at home.
The first quarter was close as both teams struggled on offense in front of a jam packed gym at TCHS and Tucker County led 11-10 after one. The Mt. Lions began to find their offense in the second quarter as they outscored the Rams 19-10 to take a 30-20 lead into the half.
In the third quarter the Tucker County defense stepped up again as they held Southern to just 6 points in the quarter and extended their lead to 41-26 after three. The Rams tried to mount a comeback, but the Mt. Lions outpaced the visitors in the final quarter 19-15 to pick up the win 60-41. Southern was held to their lowest point total of the season as they came into the game averaging 74 points per game and had scored over 80 points 6 times including the last time they played Tucker County on Jan 15th.
Ian Nichols led the Mt. Lions with 26 points and Austin Zirk finished with 15 points. Mitchell Mason added 9 points and 16 rebounds for Tucker County. The Mt. Lions JV team fell in overtime 62-58.
HAMBLETON – On Saturday Feb 8th the Tucker County Boys picked up the victory over Pendleton County 67-57.
Both teams got their offense going early as the Mt. Lions lead 20-18 after the first quarter of play. The Wildcats outscored Tucker County in the second quarter 17-12 to take a 35-32 lead into the locker room at the half.
The third quarter would belong to the Mt. Lions as they tightened up the defense to hold Pendleton County to just 10 points in the quarter and took the lead 52-45 after three. Tucker County outscored the Wildcats in the fourth quarter 15-12 to pick up the hard fought victory 67-57.
Derek Zirk led the Mt. Lions with 23 points, 7 steals and Ian Nichols added 14 points, 10 rebounds. Mitchell Mason added 11 points in the win.
The Tucker County JV team cruised to victory 50-29 in the first game of the night.
Tucker County(11-2) was scheduled to host Moorefield on Monday Feb 10th. The Mt. Lions will travel to Moorefield tonight and then finish the week at Pendleton County on Friday Feb 14th. For more sports info go to TuckerCountySports.Com.
